Our Summit Learning Trust members are from wide and varied backgrounds providing an oversight, and challenge our Trustees.
Karen Crowston
Karen is a founding Member of the Trust and Chair of the Board of Trustees. She is an independent education technology consultant following her retirement from Birmingham City Council after 32 years of service working with schools and the Local Authority. As well as supporting technology and information systems in Birmingham Karen was involved for many years with data standards nationally as a member of the DfE’s data collection STAR Chamber and Information Standards and Strategy Board. She is a very proud mother of two daughters, Samantha and Charlotte, both of whom are ex-students of Ninestiles School and Solihull Sixth Form College.
Dr Karen Roberts
Karen has been a successful school leader for over 15 years. Karen is currently CEO of The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT) which consists of 45 schools, 15 secondary schools and 30 primary schools, educating over 22,000 pupils/students and employing over 3,500 staff.
As CEO of one of the larger MATs in the country Karen also has a responsibility beyond her own organisation. To have a voice at the higher political table through regular meetings with Ministers, Ofsted Senior Officials and the National Schools Commissioner is of vital importance to the development of true system leaders and also to the development of educational policy. Wider collaboration is also crucial to a healthy organisation, and to that end she is involved with a number of large MAT CEO networks.
As a proven effective leader, Karen’s educational philosophy is clear and is driven by her energy and enthusiasm for education. Karen’s professional experience, the experience she’s had working closely with a Board of Trustees and her political acumen will allow her to provide the dynamic of critical friend from an existing practitioner perspective.
Dr Ateef Azam
Ateef is a Member. He is a Dental Surgeon at Princes End Dental Practice in Tipton, West Midlands. He has been working in the West Midlands for over 5 years. He was previously a Trustee and Chair of Yarnfield Local Governing Body. Ateef is also a Special Constable for the West Midlands Police Force, serving the community in Central Birmingham for over 5 years. Ateef enjoys reading, running and travelling.
David Werry
David was born in Wolverhampton and later qualified as a chartered accountant in Birmingham. After that he changed career path and followed his vacation into education, in which he has worked for nearly 30 years, spending more than12 years as a primary headteacher. He has been a governor in Birmingham since 2011, including 5 years as a trustee for Ninestiles Academies Trust. Away from education he sings in Lichfield Cathedral Choir and enjoys playing bridge.
Marilyn Mottram
Between 2011 and 2018, Marilyn was one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI). In her role as HMI, she led national surveys, contributed to the Chief Inspector’s annual report and was Ofsted’s deputy national lead for English. She is a qualified teacher and, prior to working for Ofsted, was a senior school improvement adviser in a local authority. She was formerly a senior lecturer in education at Birmingham City University and head of primary English. Marilyn’s socio-cultural research focuses mainly on the pedagogies and approaches to teaching English in primary schools. She has played a leading part in national research and development work in this area, working with the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA) and the Open University. Marilyn sits on the Advisory Board for the Open University’s Faculty for Literacy and Social Justice. Her work has been published in academic journals and by Routledge.
Board of Trustees
The board is made up of a wide range of highly experienced individuals with backgrounds in education, business, and finance who bring challenge and support to the organisation. The board meets regularly with Principals and the Executive Team from our Trust.

Vince Green
Vince Green is the Chief Executive Officer at Summit Learning Trust from September 2022. He joined us in January 2021 as Education Director where he provided support and challenge for our secondary and Post 16 phases. Prior to joining Summit, Vince was Regional Education Director and Executive Principal at a large multi-academy trust. Before this he was the Principal of Bristnall Hall Academy for five years, the highest performing secondary provider within its local authority and trust. Vince started his teaching career in Sendai, Japan and has held a variety of leadership roles in the West Midlands in rapidly improving schools.
Richard Beamish
Richard is Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees and Chair of Cockshut Hill Local Governing Body. Richard took up post of Vice Chair of Board of Trustees in January 2020. Richard is an education and skills consultant, most recently advising the British Council and the Korean Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE). Previously he retired following eight years as Chief Executive of Sector Skills Council Asset Skills. A former schoolteacher, Richard spent over 14 years in two spells with The Newspaper Society. There he was responsible for establishing Newspapers in Education and occupational standards for journalists, and for new media opportunities research. He was a board member of the National Council for the Training of Journalists and Chief Executive of the Print Education Forum.
Neal Clements
Neal Clements is a director of Project smart Ltd where he specialises in IT projects and training. Neal has over 40 years experience of both business and academia especially in HE and FE including lecturing and governing. His other great passion is aviation, Neal is a flying instructor. Neal chairs the Finance & Resources Committee for the Trust.
Tejal Fatania
Tejal is an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Warwick. Tejal has over 20 years’ experience in Senior HR and Management consultancy roles gained in global organisations including EY, Eon and Capgemini. Tejal has a track record of partnering businesses to achieve major change, business improvement and high-performance cultures. Tejal is passionate about enabling people to reach their full potential
Glen Collins
Glen has over 25 years commercial experience in the Business and Industrial sectors with expertise in strategic planning, new product development and developing digital marketing programmes.
He has worked for a number of large multinational corporations including GEC, Honeywell and IMI. He has lived and worked in Ireland, Switzerland and Australia.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing is a guest lecturer at Birmingham University Business School and has mentored MBA students at the Business School.
Glen is a big sports fan and enjoys cycling, golf and riding motorbikes throughout the Midlands.
Emma Pritchard
Emma Pritchard is CEO of The Black Pear Trust, based in Worcestershire. Emma has worked in education for 15 years, over this time she has worked in a diverse range of educational establishments. Furthermore she has worked alongside the Local Authority in a school improvement capacity, offering school-to-school support for schools in challenging circumstances. Emma has also worked alongside Universities to develop ITT programmes and have offered training to other professional bodies.
Caroline Hick
Caroline is Chair of Lyndon School Local Governing Board. She retired five years ago having taught English for thirty seven years in Birmingham. Fifteen years ago she was appointed to be a Magistrate and now sits as a Presiding Justice, Mentor and Appraiser in the Adult, Family and Crown Courts. Much of her spare time is spent watching Rugby and keeping in touch with her four children, two stepchildren and three grandchildren.
Colin Graham
Colin has recently retired after 35 years in financial services working for leading organisations such as Merrill Lynch, KPMG, Accenture Consulting and Barclays. He spent his career in the UK and US specialising in M&A, business development & client management. Colin has an MA in Computer Science and an MBA in Finance. Originally from Northern Ireland, he has lived in Solihull for the last 25 years. Colin is a fitness fanatic who loves to travel and read when he is not entertaining his two demanding dogs.
Lucinder Case
Lucinda worked in the legal industry for more than 30 years as a corporate solicitor in the City of London and then for a major supplier of content and technology to the courts, government and public sector lawyers, private practice lawyers and in house legal teams. Most recently she was Managing Director of the European legal business of Thomson Reuters. Her focus has always been how legal services can be delivered more efficiently and how technology can improve the administration of justice. Originally from South Yorkshire, Lucinda has lived with her family near Banbury for 26 years, and is enjoying more time at home with family and friends having spent many years of travel to the US and Europe
Jim Dolan
Jim joins us as Trustee through a connection made with the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce for his knowledge and background in technology. He has spent the majority of his 30-year career designing and implementing systems across many industries and latterly providing thought leadership on topics including digital transformation, project management and AI. As the son of a miner, in his last two roles he has been a passionate advocate for the Social Mobility networks in each organisation, as well as an active sponsor of intern programmes promoting equality and inclusion. Jim has two children of school age, Matthew and Megan, one at the start of their secondary school journey and one at the end

Executive Team
Vince Green

Kully Uppal
Prior to his new appointment as Deputy CEO at Summit Learning Trust, Kully joined Bristnall Hall Academy as a senior leader responsible for Standards and Outcomes in 2015 and was appointed Principal in 2019. This period of time saw the academy forge its reputation as the highest performing secondary school provider in its local authority and in Summer 2022, culminated in the achievement of a Progress 8 score of +0.84 and with it, a place in the top 2% of secondary schools or academies nationally. During this time, Kully also worked as a Trust Principal for a large, national multi-academy trust, where he successfully oversaw the rapid improvement of other local academies, with one academy in particular securing its first ever Ofsted Good rating. Having started his teaching career 15 years ago, Kully has successfully held a variety of leadership roles across the West Midlands and played a significant role in transforming the lives of learners and local communities he has served.
Steve Smith
Steve is the Estates & Facilities Director for the Trust and joined us in September 2016. He is a member of the British Institute of Facilities Management and has over 15 years’ experience in Facilities management, bringing extensive experience of service focused multi-site management to his role.
Imogen Colwell
Imogen Colwell joined us in May 2023 as our Finance Director. She is a Chartered Accountant and member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Prior to joining the Trust Imogen worked as an Audit Manager supporting entities in both public and private sectors with their financial management and controls, notably working with a variety of Academy Trusts
Costas Tzartzalis
Costas Tzartzalis is our IT Director. He is an IT professional with over 25 years’ experience in Education, managing high quality and extremely successful projects. He has a proven track record of delivering IT services and ensuring strong alignment with organisational goals and increasing value, while maintaining high standards within budget and tight timescales.
Anila Patel
Anila Patel is our HR Director. She joined us in April 2022 having worked as a Senior HR Professional in both the public and private sectors, including various educational settings. As a Chartered member of CIPD, Anila has extensive experience in providing strategic and operational support on all manner of HR and large scale projects.
Rebecca Lillington
Rebecca Lillington joined Summit Learning Trust in January 2021 as Director of the Professional Learning Institute and leads on developing the professional learning offer for 850 (?) colleagues across the Trust. Prior to joining Summit, Rebecca was based at Cirencester Deer Park School, Gloucestershire for 18 years working in various leadership roles linked to teaching, learning and professional development. Rebecca has also worked in Initial Teacher Education for over 15 years as a Subject Leader for Geography and now as Director of South Birmingham SCITT. Rebecca is a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching (FCCT) and is currently studying for an EdD with the University of Bristol, researching the promotion of geo-literacies.
Principals
David Barker
David is the Principal at The Oaklands Primary School and took up the post in September 2021. With over 17 year’s experience in the education sector, he has taught in primary schools in Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes and Birmingham. His leadership career began when he was appointed Assistant Headteacher at a school in Milton Keynes. He then relocated to the West Midlands to take up the post of Assistant Principal at Erdington Hall Primary (part of Summit Learning Trust), before being promoted to Vice Principal. Building the school community and working closely with parents and carers is important to David and he believes strongly in providing a school environment that supports, develops and inspires all pupils. David is passionate about school improvement, the arts and providing every pupil with the best opportunities.
Davinder Jandu
Davinder has been Principal of Yarnfield Primary School since November 2018. Davinder has nearly 15 years of senior leadership experience, during which time has led a number of schools successfully, both as a Headteacher and Executive Headteacher. In her most recent headship, she led the school from being identified as one of the bottom 200 primary schools in the country to Outstanding. As a mother and a wife, Davinder values time spent with family and friends.
Alex Hughes
Alex is the Principal at Ninestiles, An Academy having taken up post in April 2019. He has over 15 years’ experience within the Summit Learning Trust secondary schools and has undertaken significant school improvement work across Birmingham, Gloucester and in East Sussex. In his role as a Specialist Leader in Education Alex was also part of the DfE delegation to China advising on developments in maths education. Alex believes every young person has the right to an excellent education and enjoys working with disadvantaged communities to develop social mobility. When not at school Alex enjoys golf and cycling often undertaking challenges to raise money for charitable causes.
Abid Butt
Abid is the Principal at Lyndon School. He has worked in education for over 21 years and for the main served in senior leadership roles including Advanced Skills Teacher, Assistant, Deputy and Associate Headteacher. His primary area of expertise is delivering school improvement through a partnership approach with key stakeholders. He has successfully contributed to raising standards in education within Solihull including more recently at Lyndon School. Throughout his career Abid has worked closely with the National College to improve the quality of professional learning programmes available to senior leaders and was one of the first to graduate with the revised National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) in 2009. In 2021, supported by the Summit Learning Trust, Abid has successfully completed his National Professional Qualification for Executive Leaders. (NPQEL)
Jason Bridges
Dr Martin Sullivan
Martin is the Principal of The Sixth Form College, Solihull. He became a research chemist after graduating from university and gained a PhD. It was during this time he found his true passion for education. He is dedicated to ensuring that all students achieve their potential and committed to opening them up to all the opportunities that education can offer. Martin is particularly keen to improve the lives of students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. He has been teaching since 1994 and has been in a leadership position since 1996 and a senior leader for over 14 years.
Jenni Downes
Jenni joined Erdington Hall Primary School in September 2022. Jenni has previously worked as a Principal in Sandwell for 4 years and as a Deputy Head in a school, that moved from good to outstanding, in Wolverhampton for 19 years.
She was a leading English teacher in Wolverhampton for over 15 years and a KS2 Writing moderator for 6 years. Jenni is passionate about raising standards and ensuring that all learners as well as colleagues have the best opportunities to achieve the highest standard possible. Continuing to develop the whole school family as an academy as well as part of our Trust family is important to her.
Jenni has a young family of her own and appreciates the challenges families face and the importance of making time for friends and family.
